Partnering for workplace safety - In 1999 the Wichita site rolled out the Mobile Training Lab, an Industry-first training concept. The HSI, working closely with multiple organizations and multiple union crafts, developed a 53-foot Mobile Training Lab.

The concept was a response to an audit which indicated that even though workers had completed their required/monitored training (including the associated written test), a large percentage of those individuals failed when performing the tasks in the field. These results were a significant concern. The original Mobile Training Lab served as a hands-on application tool to ensure that workers could safety perform critical tasks associated with Lock-out/Tag/Try-out, Confined Space Entry (aircraft and non-aircraft), Confined Space Rescue and Respirator Fit test. Given the potential for severe injury or even death which could result from mistakes made in these lines-of-work, the Mobile Training Lab serves a very valuable role in providing a safe venue for workers to test their knowledge, learn from their mistakes and apply what has been learned out on the job. The Wichita HSI teamed with Learning, Training, and Development, who currently provides the training employing this unique HSI-developed tool for the "hands-on proficiency" training segment.
