Effective communication with employees and managers about the hazards of materials, processes and machines is an ongoing requirement and major goal of the Institute. As part of this effort, the Institute has created a Hazard Communication Team (HCT) composed of representatives from the company and the union.
The team meets monthly to review ways to improve health and safety performance issues resulting from changes in machines, processes or materials. The team stays current on trends in the industry and in manufacturing, and works to keep employees informed of all pertinent issues.
HCT's mission is to promote information flow to employees about the occupational health implications of: (1) proposed changes in materials, processes, and machines; (2) shop redesigns and relocations; and (3) employee reassignments and relocations.
HCT brings together union representatives with knowledge of hazard communication in the factory, company representatives from Safety Health and Environmental Affairs (SHEA), Material and Process Technology (M&PT), and company and union representatives from the Health and Safety Institute "in Core Team" that provides continuous review of health and safety issues in the workplace. Operating under the Joint Programs National Governing Board, the team meets at least monthly to address current hazcom problems, as well as to anticipate potential hazcom concerns that may be associated with emergent situations.
The team guides communications based on the level of employee concern and on company and site best practices. Communication methods include videos/crew meetings, communication bulletins, web postings, and AeroMechanic articles and tips.
Two representatives from each Site Committee serve on the HCT Focal Team which meets with the Core team on a monthly basis
Employees are encouraged to contact an HCT Core or Focal member if they have suggestions, questions or concerns about Hazard Communications.
